First we need to understand the theories behind ghost and why they remain and why some of them are never seen or heard from again.

The theories cover a wide range of topics and any paranormal investigator can make their theory fit the reasonable explanation they have come up with.

For those of us that believe in ghosts and spirits, we understand that most theories revolve around the fact that the ghost may not realize they have passed and may have un-finished business on earth.

I know it sounds crazy, a ghost having unfinished business but in a lot of theories about ghosts this is one of the main reasons ghosts will hang around.

For example, at some locations that have had a lot of violent crimes (murder) ghost are more likely to remain in that location.

Most of the theories revolved around the person were killed before it was time to pass on to the afterlife. In some cases the ghost may or may not even realize they are now a ghost. Then of course if the ghost doesn’t realize they are deceased then it is likely they will remain on earth.

Some people have posted theories of ghost tend to hang out in an area where there are a lot of different emotions and energies. For example, when I first started ghost hunting I never realized how many public schools have reported paranormal activity. As I kept researching the activities at the schools on theory I kept running across was that there are so many students in a school every school day and with those students comes an over whelming amount of energy. With the energy will also come every possible emotion you could think of all combined into one location. Since the theories states ghosts need energy, what better place to get all the energy a ghost needed.

Another location that seemed to have a lot of activity has been hotel/motels. Once again this theory all points back to the number of people there in a days’ time and all of energy and different emotional that all the people bring with them when they check in.

Now also with the hotel/motel hauntings, I have also read a lot of the hotels have been built on haunted grounds. The ghost may have nothing to do with the hotel at all but because this was the location of their death before the hotel was built, the ghost has decided to hang out and watch you check in. Hopefully you can check out.

Of course then we have a lot of other locations that report paranormal activity and this include battle fields. Not a lot of explanation should be needed for a battle field but just in case a lot of people all died before their time and now hang out at the place of their death.

Home hauntings are one of the most common places people report “paranormal activity”. Now of course a lot of cases of paranormal activity can be explained away by an over active imagination. For example hear scratching in the night, one case this turned out to be rats in the walls but still to this day the owners believe their house is haunted.

Why would ghost hang out at home? Well first I think we need to think about ghost and who they were in life. Where is the one place most people are most comfortable at? You got it, at home. So with this theory it would be a common ghost hang out.

Some theories also revolve around the ghost having unfinished business like I said before. For example if a person was murdered they may want to stay until the business is completed. Let’s they were in the process of having a baby, the ghost my hang out until the baby is born. Once that unfinished business is complete, they may feel free to leave.

Some theories revolve around ghost will remain as they were when they were human. Let’s say the husband was the protector of the family, he might hang out to make sure nothing happens to his family.

We have all heard reports of “I started to remodel and all of this activity started”. It is believed that ghost when they decide to stay home; they want to make sure nothing happens to their home. Just like when they were human.

One location that I investigated we had reported of remodeling taking place and one of the people working heard her name called and when she answered no one was there. She looked around everywhere and no one. Finally she started talking back to the ghost and the next thing she heard as he was getting ready to leave was looking good. The ghosts were happy with the cleanup and remodeling.

So to answer your question as to why ghost won’t go away, the answer is one we will likely never know for sure until we ourselves become a ghost.

There are many theories and most all revert back to the unfinished business or the ghost does not even realize they have died.

One thing for sure, regardless of why they remain on earth may never be known for a fact, but it sure makes for some interesting paranormal investigations.

That’s an excellent question and it’s not a short answer. The answer to this question is very complex and covers a lot of different theories and trying to find answers about the unknown. The unknown, as most any paranormal investigator will tell you most everything about the dead and the ghost, spirits and the paranormal are still unknown even though there are many theories that cover a lot of the aspects of the paranormal. Granted some prove these theories provide the evidence needed to prove ghost and spirits roam the earth among humans and some claim the theories are only “make believe” to try to prove that ghosts exist.

The paranormal field is probably one of the most criticized and one field that has people believing everything from no ghosts exists, to the demons can possess you and everything in between. I find it funny that you hear the non-believers screaming to the top of their voice that there is no such thing as ghost and then the people involved in paranormal investigations or ghost hunting screaming at the top of their voice that they have proof that “paranormal activity” exist.

One thing for sure is regardless of what you believe right now about ghost, spirits and the paranormal is the only way we will ever know for a fact about ghost, spirits and the paranormal is to become a ghost ourselves.

Now back to the answer of why ghost hunting or paranormal investigations. To start with this is a field that is still wide open for research and development of new techniques to ghost hunt. This field is exciting and can be boring at some times, but the times there are unexplained events taking place it makes it all worthwhile. The times of activity also makes my desires grow to find more answers about what is happening and why it is happening.

It’s also very exciting at times and to give you an example I was at one location and there was a large group of investigators present and we were walking down a hallway and we got to a door to a room and as we passed by the door, I had an overwhelming feeling of sadness and fear coming from that room. There was one investigator that refused to even stop by that entire area because of the feeling. The room was completely empty and yet this feeling was so strong, it made me want to run, but I stepped away from the door and everything returned to normal. A few of us stood there for a few minutes talking about that feeling and we went back to the door one at a time and the feeling returned once again to all of us that went back to the door. We also encountered this feeling every time we entered and left the location.

Now at this particular investigation we split up into teams and rotated in and out of the location and every single time we went in or out of the location we all had this horrible feeling of sadness and fear. We later learned that a lady had committed suicide in that very room. How can anyone come up with a reasonable explanation of this feeling of fear and sadness? And not just by one person but by many people in our group.

Now granted at this location the list of unexplained activity was rather long and one would think it would definitely prove paranormal activity but we still have some that did not believe regardless of what happened. For example my digital recorder was brand new and I had only used it to test it before the investigation. I went and bought a pack of new batteries and they were all completely charged and yet every single time I stepped into the location, my batteries would completely drain. How can anyone explain this activity? We have some that just said its bad batteries, but they were checked before use and were completely charged and not to mention I replaced those batteries several times throughout the night. While outside of the location, my recorder worked just fine and recorded everything being said and the second I would step back into the location, the batteries were dead again. Once again how could anyone come up with a reasonable explanation of our battery drainage and note that this happened to several pieces of equipment throughout the night and not just my recorder.

Another unexplained event that took place was we were in a room were a young child resided and a lot of females had reported different feelings in that room and once in a while a male would have something happen. There were a couple people inside the room and I was standing just outside the door and all of the sudden it felt like I was getting a shot in my lower leg. It was a sharp pain and I stepped away from the door to check my leg and the pain went away and there was nothing there, no marks, no redness, nothing at all. My leg looked fine. I returned to the door way to check on how the rest of the team was doing and “bam” the pain hit again and I said it feels like I’m getting a shot in my leg. I stepped away from the door again and once again, they pain went away and my leg looked fine. Later we learned that the little boy that was a patient at this location used to get shots in the leg and he would often times do things to make the males leave the room. Once again I must ask how any person can come up with a reasonable explanation for these events happening.

Now I could go on and one with more details from different investigations but I think you get my point of wanting to find the answers about the afterlife and what happens once we become a ghost, spirit or part of the paranormal world. I want to know the answers to the question, why. Why some activity takes place only once in a while and other activities seems to happen on a regular basis or continuously. Why, is the first part of my answer as to why I ghost hunt.

Of course there are numerous theories all around the paranormal world and for example like the needle in the leg feeling, it has been rumored that the little boy only liked females in his room and would do whatever it took to keep the males out. It was reported that he was like that in life so it would make sense that he would be like that in death.

That’s another theory I want to know more about and a lot of people have theorized that ghost and spirits usually act the same as when they were alive. So if they were nice and playful, they would be nice and playful in death and as a ghost or spirit. The same stands true if the person was in a bad mood or grouchy all the time in life then that person would be in a bad mood or grouchy in death. These theories I think would stand true and they make sense. But of course some people also theorize that some ghost or spirits just do not want people in their home or the location they have decided to claim as home. So regardless of the mood in life, it may be a simple threat from a ghost or spirit to leave their place of abode. Then of course some theories state that something the ghost and spirits are just playful and trying to let you know that they are present and you are in their home or place of abode. So these theories all make sense but it still leaves questions unanswered and it all goes back to why? Why do some spirits make sounds, move items have an odor and why do some ghosts and spirits do nothing except sit back and watch the activity taking place in their place of abode.

Then of course we have many theories about ghost and spirits in general like the different type of ghost and hauntings. They can range from an interactive encounter all the way to a demonic possession. Demons along open up a whole new set of questions and an entire subject for extensive research and why most all paranormal investigators never get involved with the demonic realm.

However, for those that have reported witnessing ghosts or paranormal entities, there are a few commonalities that stand out. These ghostly archetypes will now be reviewed, with details, and possible thoughts about their origins.

Probably one of the more common sightings reported is known as the ‘orb’. These ghastly balls of white light usually manifest only on film, though sometimes are potent enough to be seen with the naked eye. They are never reported to be particularly malevolent, and manifest commonly in cemeteries. However, one of the more confusing aspects of these types of sightings, is the fact that common dust or light artifacts can be bent in such a manner as to create an orb. As a result, most sightings are dismissed.

Another common sighting, is the simple shadow. Said to be a shadow, yet given form, and its own will, these objects can take the form of a man, or can simply be an inexplicable decrease or increase in ambient light. However, much like the orbs, there are quite a few natural, and thus not paranormal, explanations for shadow apparitions. As a result, they get about as much respect as the orbs do.

Whenever a paranormal activity happens, without an actual manifestation, it becomes known as a poltergeist. For example, if a door opens by itself, or a light mysterious turns on. Any number of happenings can be classified as such. Poltergeists are probably some of the more credible reports in the community, simply because without the evident paranormal explanation, you still have a happening which is quite paranormal. Even hoaxing these happenings would require some amount of skill.

The last type of ghostly visage is just that, a full or partial body apparition. In this, the ghost appears as it did in life, with all the accoutrement of its time and place. Depending upon the clarity of the evidence, and how it was collected, determines how it is generally received by the public. Often, first-hand accounts are dismissed, while video-graphic evidence is held in high regard, even if it can be hoaxed reliably.

These are some of the more common types of ghost sightings. However, it is important to remember that the list is not exhaustive, and that most investigators put a lot of credit into psychic sensors as well. Good luck ghost hunting!

Video Camera

Note Taking

Note taking is a mandatory task for ghost hunters. Hence a Dictaphone is usually part of ghost hunter’s equipment. You must record details of your experience from start to finish. This will include the location of the hunt, time you reached there, time you began setting up your gadgets and the entire experience during the hunt. Accuracy will come in handy when you are comparing the sounds and videos with your personal experience.

Portable Computer

An easy to carry Lap top or PDA device can be handy when you are researching on potential haunted houses or towns. It will be helpful in data analysis and compilation of the information gathered. Of course the PC must have dedicated ghost hunting software to make operations easier.

Overall, it is possible to detect paranormal entities, you just need to have the right equipment for the job. Without this equipment you will not be taken seriously within the ghost hunting community as you will have no proof of your findings.
