How to Become an Amateur Ghost Hunter

With television shows like Ghost Hunters, UFO Hunters and even lighter shows such as the Ghost Whisperer there is a growing interest in amateurs wanting to take part in their own ghost hunting experiences. When you watch some of these television shows the professionals have thousands of dollars in sophisticated equipment to help them track down their ghosts and spirits. It can be a little overwhelming but rest assured, you don’t need all of the high tech gadgets they use to become an amateur ghost hunter.

Many years ago in University as part of an anthropology course I attended a “ghost” tour of our downtown area. There were many old buildings that had associated ghost stories that I had never heard of and I have lived here my whole life. If there are lots of ghost stories in my small town you can bet there are a few ghost hunting groups and books written about those ghosts.

If you want to start ghost hunting look to join a local group. You can find them via the Internet, a local College or University or even at your local Library. I bet you will be surprised how many there are. Research them each out carefully and even attend a couple meetings to find which one is right for you.

Do some research on local ghosts and legends. You will need to familiarize yourself with the stories and legends of ghosts in your area. If you live in a small community the internet may not be the best for you but a trip to your local library or university library should have exactly what you are looking for.

Use the internet and read up on ghosts, spirits and the paranormal. You have to learn the techniques ghost hunters use, learn the language they use and learn how to investigate ghost stories.

You will need some basic equipment to get started but it’s nothing that most of us already have in our possession. Take along a flashlight, digital camera, laptop computer and a tape recorder or recording device. Your laptop can do the latter for you. Also bring along a witness so they can back your story up if and when you do have an experience.

Have fun and don’t get discouraged. Not every fisherman catches a fish every time the go out.

My dad died in the house that I have lived in all my life. Before my family moved in this house, there was a pig pen in the area of where the house stands today. We experience shadows, names being called, visualisations of my dad, his father, his mother, my mothers father and a few children who are unknown. Before my dads dad past on, I seen his deceased older sister go from his house to the garage where my grandfather ran a business. Its been pretty quit lately, but it gets pretty intense every once in a while. My ex sister in law lives in a house where I have heard “mommy, and yes,” to some questions I’ve asked. They have been told that there is at least 4-5 spirits living there. Its crazy going in there and seeing the living and also seeing the non-living in the house. They have tried to get history on the house and it dates back before the Abe Lincoln. Its pretty amazing what I’ve seen and heard there. But, that’s only a few places I’ve checked out and would love to check out more places.
